Curriculum and Pastoral System

Elthorne is organised into year groups each containing between six and eight tutor groups.

Each year group has a Head of year and an Assistant Head of Year, who where possible, will remain with the Year group until the end of Year 11. Each year group also has a non- teacher attached to their year group (pastoral support worker or non-teaching Year Leader).  Our Transition Leader liaises with the primary schools that our students come from and we have very strong and comprehensive links to our feeder schools.

The lower years (7 to 9) cover the National Curriculum's Key Stage 3 level of work and are overseen by an Assistant Headteacher (Key Stage 3). In the same way, Years 10 and 11 are overseen by an Assistant Headteacher (Key Stage 4).

In the Sixth form students are organised into tutor groups which currently comprises four per year group. There is an Assistant Headteacher (Key Stage 5) and an Assistant Head of Sixth Form.
Each subject area has a Head of Department with overall responsibility for the curriculum, teaching, learning, behaviour and staff development of the staff within it. Each subject area is line managed by a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), who works with the Head of Department to support the performance of staff and the progress of students.
